Scientist (Postdoc) - Dienstag, 31. August 2010

The GKSS Research Centre is operating the German Engineering Materials Science Centre (GEMS; http://gems.gkss.de) based on the complementary use of synchrotron radiation and neutrons at our outstations at DESY in Hamburg and at the FRM II in Garching. As a collaborating research group there we are currently commissioning the High Energy Materials Science Beamline (HEMS) at the new high-brilliance synchrotron radiation source PETRA III at DESY. In this framework we are looking for a Scientist (Postdoc) - Hamburg (Code-No. 2010/WP 4) who will strengthen and further develop our activities in residual stress analysis with diffraction methods using synchrotron radiation with particular emphasis on the single-grain level.

You will participate in the technical and scientific development of the new state-of-the-art undulator beamline HEMS (http://www.gkss.de/central_departments/genf/branch/desy/004478/index_0004478.html) which has a main energy around 100 keV (tunable in the range 30 to 300 keV) and will further be optimized for sub-micrometer focusing, thus offering unique opportunities in the fields of material science and physics. You will be responsible for the commissioning and operation of the mapper, a specialized instrument for grain tracking type experiments. Applications include 3D x-ray microscopy, diffraction contrast tomography, high angular resolution 3D-XRD, and topo-tomography. The instrument will be used for the characterization of the microstructure and strain of polycrystalline materials. You will assist external users in preparing and running their experiments there. Together with external collaborations from universities and industry groups and strong internal cooperation with the nearby home institute in Geesthacht you are expected to develop an innovative in-house research program for grain mapping which should exploit the unique features of HEMS and its various sample environments (fatigue loading, furnace, welding, cryostat etc.). Good skills in instrumentation and experience in high-energy X-ray scattering and/or tomographic methods at 3rd generation synchrotron radiation sources are a benefit. In addition, you are expected to provide support to external users within your working field at the other instruments at HEMS and at the GKSS wiggler beamline HARWI II (DORIS III, DESY). For specific inquiries please contact Dr. Norbert Schell.

International collaborations as well as cooperation with staff members and other scientists at GKSS are highly encouraged. Opportunities for gaining additional qualifications especially in the field of joining techniques (e.g. friction-stir welding as well as laser beam welding for aircraft construction) are available.

A Ph.D. or equivalent in materials science and engineering, physics, chemistry or a related field is mandatory. Beside good communication skills also in publishing or presenting results at international conferences, the position requires experience in the respective scattering, tomography and/or instrumentation techniques using synchrotron radiation and flexible team work. We expect good English language skills; German language skills are an asset.

The position will initially be for three years with the possibility of conversion to a permanent appointment. We offer an appropriate salary, related to TV-AVH, as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the GKSS goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.

Please send your application with CV and references indication Code-No.: 2010/WP 4 until 20. September 2010 to
